How to Plan Your Road Test

What is a Road Test?

The final steps of driver education occur when a student passes a test in a vehicle with an examiner certifed by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and earns their driver's license. This in-car exam is known as the Road Skills Test or "Road Test".

In the state of Texas, driver education students are allowed to take their Road Test with a 3rd-party driving school that has been approved by the Department of Public Safety.

How Do I Schedule a Road Test with National Driver Training?

If you'd like to schedule your Texas Road Test with us, there are a few things you'll need beforehand.

Teens

  • Completed 32 hours of classroom education
  • Completed 44 hours of behind the wheel practice
  • Held a learner's permit for at least 6 months
You’ll know you have the correct certificate if it says "For Driver License Only" near the top.
IMPACT Texas Teen (ITTD) Certificate - Once a student has obtained their DE-964 Certificate for their license. They'll need to take the free 2-hour IMPACT Texas Teen Driving Safety Course. This is not a replacement for the DE-964. Both certificates are required to take a road test.
DISCLAIMER: The IMPACT Course Certificate is only valid for 90 days. So, be sure you are ready to schedule your Road Test when you enroll in the IMPACT course. Otherwise, you'll need to take the course over again.
Learner's Permit (Learner's License) - This certifies a student is able to practice driving with a licensed driver who is 21 or older present in the vehicle.
Your driving test. You'll also need to send photos of the front and back of the license to NDT to verify it is valid. (The paper version of the Learner's Permit issued by the Department of Public Safety is also valid for the Road Test.)
Adults

IMPACT Texas Adult (ITAD) Certificate - Once a student has obtained their ADE-1317 Certificate for their license. They'll need to take the free 2-hour IMPACT Texas Adult Driving Safety Course.
