The Parent Taught Drivers Ed (PTDE) Course can be completed from a mobile phone, tablet or computer. What are the age requirements to get a permit in Texas?


Students can begin Parent Taught Drivers Ed in Texas as early as 14 years old. However, you must be 15 years old to obtain the official permit in Texas.

Is Drivers Ed required to get a permit in Texas?


Yes, Drivers Ed of some degree will be required in order to get a permit in Texas. The state requires a minimum of 32-hours of online driver education. National Driver Training offers Parent Taught Drivers Ed and Instructor-led courses to meet these requirements. Our program allows you to obtain your permit after completing the first 6-hours via desktop, tablet, or phone.

How do you get your permit in Texas?


To obtain your permit in Texas, you need to:

 

  • Meet all requirements for a TDLR approved Parent Taught course.
  • Pass your Online written permit exam.
  • Bring your documents to your local Department of Public Safety.
  • Pay the required fee of $16 for the permit license fee.

Who can you drive with when you hold a Texas permit?


Teens that hold a Texas permit can drive with an adult who is at least 21 years old. The adult must be with the driver at all times when behind the wheel, and seated in the front seat next to the permit holder.

Steps to getting your first Texas Drivers License

Complete your online program


At this point, you have completed the first six hours of your program. Students must now complete the rest of the 32 hours of instruction. In addition, students must also practice 44 hours of behind the wheel training with a parent, legal guardian, or certified instructor. At least 10 of those hours must be at night. After completing the course, the student can instantly download the final certificate that includes the required DE964E.

Finish the 2-hour Impact Texas Teen Driver's Course


All drivers under 18 must complete the Impact Texas Teen Drivers program (ITTD) in order to obtain a license. Any driver wanting to take a driving skills test in the state of Texas must hold an ITTD certificate of completion. The exam must be taken within 90 days of completing the Impact Texas Teen Drivers course. Teens must complete the online Texas Parent Taught Drivers Ed Program and behind the wheel prior to taking the ITTD course.

How to apply for a Texas Driver's License


Teens must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and must make an appointment at their local Texas DPS office. In order to obtain a Texas Driver's License, students will have to complete and pass a road skills test at the Department of Motor Vehicle. These items must be brought to the DPS when you arrive:

 

  • Final completion certificate (includes required DE964E) downloaded from National Driver Training.
  • ITTD certificate of completion.
  • Proof of Identification
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • Proof of US Citizenship
  • Proof of Texas Residency
  • VOE (Verification of Enrollment and Attendance to verify high school enrollment)
  • Texas vehicle registration and proof of financial responsibility for vehicle owner.

Drivers under the age of 18 are issued a "Provisional License", which expires on the drivers 18th birthday. These licenses are vertical and marked "Provisional".
