This course is designed for families that do not meet Texas’s standard for instructing their teen to drive or wish to have an instructor do 7 hours of in-car instruction and 7 hours of observation. The remaining 30 hours of driving can be completed with a licensed adult age 25 or older.

How old do you have to be to get a permit in Texas?


Students can start Instructor Led Drivers Ed in Texas as early as 14 years old. You must be 15 years old to obtain the official permit in Texas.

Is Drivers Ed required to get a permit in Texas?

Drivers Ed is required to get a permit in Texas. A minimum of 32-hours of approved instruction is required for all Texas drivers. National Driver Training offers Instructor Led and Parent Taught Drivers Ed courses approved by the Department of Public Safety. NDT's program enables you to get your permit after finishing the initial 6-hours of training. Online training can be done with a PC, Mac, tablet, or phone.

How does a new driver get their permit in Texas?


To obtain your permit in Texas, you need to:

 

  • Meet all requirements for a TDLR approved Instructor Led course.
  • Pass your Online written permit exam with a 70% or above.
  • Provide your documents to your local Department of Public Safety.
  • Pay the required fee of $16 for the permit license fee.

Who can Texas permit holders drive with?

Teens that have a Texas permit can drive with any adult who is at least 21 years old. Drivers holding a permit must be accompanied by an adult at all times. The adult must be seated in the front seat next to the permit holder.

Complete your Instructor Led program


After completing your first 6 hours of drivers ed, students must now complete the remaining 32 hours of online instruction. This Instructor Led program is for families that do not meet the standard for Parent Taught Drivers Ed or wish to have an instructor do the 7 hours of in-car instruction and 7 hours of observation. The remaining 30 hours of driving can be done with a licensed adult age 25 or older.

Finish the 2-hour Impact Texas Teen Driver's Course

All drivers under 18 must complete the Impact Texas Teen Drivers program (ITTD) in order to obtain a license. Any permit holder wanting to take a driving skills test in the state of Texas must obtain an ITTD certificate of completion. The driving skills test must be taken within 90 days of completing the Impact Texas Teen Drivers course. Teens must complete the online Texas Instructor Led Drivers Ed Program and behind the wheel prior to taking the ITTD course.

Steps to apply for a Texas Driver's License

Teens must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian and must make an appointment at their local Texas DPS office. In order to obtain a Texas Driver's License, students will have to complete and pass a road skills test at the Department of Motor Vehicle. These items must be brought to the DPS when you arrive:

 

  • Final completion certificate (includes required DE964E) downloaded from National Driver Training.
  • ITTD certificate of completion.
  • Proof of Identification
  • Proof of Social Security Number
  • Proof of US Citizenship
  • Proof of Texas Residency
  • VOE (Verification of Enrollment and Attendance to verify high school enrollment)
  • Texas vehicle registration and proof of financial responsibility for vehicle owner.

Drivers under the age of 18 are issued a "Provisional License", which expires on the drivers 18th birthday. These licenses are vertical and marked "Provisional".
